Welcome to the New Buddhist Geeks Site!
On March 1st, 2010 we launched the new Buddhist Geeks Digital Magazine site—the site you’re on now! This post is intended to show you around the new site, as well as to let you know about some things that are coming in the future. As many of you may know, this site was able to be created because the incredible generosity of our micropatrons. We were able to raise enough money to design the new site from the ground up—a special thanks to our incredibly talented designer Ryan Scherf for his work there—and build all sorts of great new features into it.
What’s New
First and foremost you’ll notice that the Buddhist Geeks Podcast has been ported over from the Personal Life Media network to its new home here. If you are already subscribed through iTunes, or some other program, then there’s nothing you’ll need to do in order to keep getting the show. It will automatically change over and you should continue receiving new episodes each week. If you aren’t subscribed yet, you’ll see several subscription options on the right-hand side of the page. Subscribing to the podcast ensures that you’ll receive the most recent podcast automatically through your preferred medium. We suggest the iTunes program as the best way to receive the weekly podcast.
The next thing that you may notice is that we have a section of the site called “Digital Magazine.” Though we’re referring to the whole site as a digital magazine, with the podcast being part of that, here we mean the new posts that come directly from the community, screened and edited by our editorial team, and then released throughout the week. We plan on publishing several new articles each week, and those can be found in the Magazine Section. If you’re interested in submitting a piece to the magazine, go check out the Submissions Page for more detailed information on how you can do that.
Another powerful feature that we’ve included on the site is a new powerful commenting system. This system is powered by a service called Intense Debate–think digital monks debating in the courtyard of Buddhist Geeks–which has all kinds of useful functions built in. These include threaded commenting, the ability for users to track comment threads via e-mail, and a powerful moderation system so that we can keep the conversation on track. Our hope is that this feature creates the ability to have insightful and robust dialogues around some of the content presented here. We will be doing our best to moderate this new space, so that a space of mutual respect can be upheld.
Another feature that we’re psyched about, appears on the bottom of each post—both for magazine and podcast posts—and that is the “Related Posts” feature. Just as the name suggests, this feature analyzes various dimensions of the post, and feeds back a list of posts that have similar content. If you find that you really enjoy a particular article or podcast, then check out this list and explore other similar material.
Future Features
Moving forward, we’ll be looking at ways to make the site progressively better. Part of our immediate plan for the future is in adding a Buddhist meditation store, full of in-depth media programs to help support people’s individual meditation practices. In addition we want to add an advanced search feature that allows you to browse by teacher, tradition, and topic (making it easier to find the content you’re interested in). With so much content being generated here, one of our main challenges will be to make it easy for people to find the material they’re most interested in.
We also want to find out from those of you who are using the site, what features you’d most be interested in seeing. What would help make Buddhist Geeks the best possible resource of 21st century digital dharma in the world? If you have feedback, or just want to tell us how awesome the new site is, go to our Contact Page and drop us a line.
